The economy of Alberta today is increasingly technological and science based. Our future prosperity depends on motivated young people who are knowledgeable in science, arts, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEAM) and are familiar with the principles of scientific investigation. One of the best ways to foster student interest is by using hands-on or enquiry-based methods, consistent with existing and developing curricula in Alberta. Through our affiliation with Youth Science Canada (https://youthscience.ca/) we provide opportunities for students to compete at the national level for prizes and scholarships at major universities. Our goal is to foster hands-on Science Education by supporting Science Fairs in schools, hosting the annual Regional Science Fair and preparing our top students for national competition.
The Regional Science Fair takes place in late March each year at Medicine Hat College. Students from schools across our region compete at the junior (grades 4-6), intermediate (grades 7-8) and senior (grades 9-12) level for certificates, participation prizes and special awards. Judging is provided by scientists, engineers and other professionals under the supervision of the Chief Judge. Each year up to five students at the intermediate and senior levels are selected to compete at the Canada Wide Science Fair as part of Team Alberta with all expenses paid including airfare, meals and accommodation for a week of competition, field trips and social opportunities with approximately 500 of the top young scientists in Canada. Two chaperones accompany our students. CWSF competitions are organized by Youth Science Canada and held in Ottawa, Edmonton, Windsor, Charlottetown, Fredericton and other major cities. The 2023 Canada Wide Science Fair will be held in Edmonton (May 14 to 19).
The 2023 Regional Science Fair will be both virtual and in-person (students can register beginning February 15 and compete in both fairs if they wish):
- Virtual Fair (online): March 15 to 22 (register by March 11 – 6:00 PM)
- In-Person Fair (Medicine Hat College): April 1 (register by March 29 – 6:00 PM)
Registration and more information is available at https://www.seab-sciencefair.ca or the Science Fair Committee (contact Peter Wallis at hyperion@telusplanet.net).
Registration for both fairs will open February 15, 2023
